Vintage Number Plates Black & Silver Number Plates

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Vintage number plates is a term often used to describe black and silver number plates that are for use on vehicles first registered before 01/01/1973. Vehicles registered after this date should only have white number plates on the front of the vehicle and yellow to the rear.

Black and silver number plates can be manufactured in various ways. Traditionally vintage number plates were made from pressed metals, typically aluminum. The metal plate would be sprayed black and baked after the digits had been pressed out. Once sprayed the paint would be removed to leave a silver finish to the face of the number plate.

Acrylic can also be used to  manufacture vintage number plates as an alternative to the pressed aluminum number plates. The acrylic black and silver number plates are produced in layers and laminated resulting in a reflective number plate. This process would not have been used originally when older classic vehicles were made and for this reason only we would recommend for any restoration project aluminum vintage number plates.

Can I Have Black Number Plates ?

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Black number plates can legally go on a vehicle in the UK. There are very strict rules that dictate which vehicles are eligible for black number plates. Any vehicle that was constructed before 1st January 1973 can legally have the vehicle registration number displayed on black number plates.

When vehicles started having registrations and therefore number plates the original display was on black number plates with white lettering. Classic number plates these days tend to be black number plates with silver lettering. There are acrylic black number plates on the market but classic number plates, ideal for a car restoration project would usually be a metal number plate.

The metal number plates have the vehicle registration number pressed using dies the same way they always have been. The metal is sprayed and stoved to create black number plates then pressed with the vehicle registration number. The registration numbers that were issued prior to 1973 were dateless in that they had no year indicator i.e. PSV 164 and early suffix numbers up to a C suffix. So a registration number like EKR 871C could also legally have black number plates.
