A Crazy dream : Dashing to LAX, on the last leg of our fly drive holiday to the United States, we realized we were one souvenir short for our car crazy nephew. We pulled up outside a Seven Eleven to see if we could find something appropriate but left empty handed, exiting the Seven Eleven we spotted the most fantastic car number plate on a Chevy parked over the street. I kept look out whilst my husband dashed over and wrenched the number plate from the Chevy ‘ACE M4N’.
It was naughty and we know we shouldn’t have done it, but the car registration plate made for the ultimate souvenir! When we returned home our Nephew was delighted with the car registration plate, it really got me thinking as to weather car registration plates are collectors items? A little bit of research on the Internet and it turns out to be a big business. Car registration plates are traded heavily, sent daily to and from every corner of the Earth. Searching an Internet auction site, registration plates can sell for huge sums of money; the ACE M4N plate that my husband and I acquired whilst on holiday in California could be expected to sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
What is it about an identifier number for a car that makes them so interesting? Why are car registration plates traded for huge sums of money, and why do tourists feel obliged to steal them as souvenirs? They are questions I don’t know the answer for, but I am hooked on collecting car registration plates, so should you find your car missing a registration plate next time you check, our paths may have passed. Am I alone in my naught habit of collection car registration plates, or is it known to be an addiction?
