UK Car Number Plate

UK Car Number Plate

There was a time when people could trust others when it came to their license plates. Sadly, those times are long gone. It is now a common thing, all over the UK, to hear a firsthand story of how car number plates have been stolen. And although this is a very serious crime, there are the odd drivers that do not know how serious of an issue it is to have ones number plates stolen.Well, to show the seriousness of it all, let us have a look at a probe into cases of stolen number plates that occurred in the North. The results show that in the last six years alone there have been around 4500 number plates stolen from cars, with almost half of these plates being stolen over the last two and a half years alone – indicating that the crime is actually getting worse. Further proof can be seen in the fact that in April of 2012, 17 cars’ number plates were stolen in Consett in, get this, just two hours!

The main reasons that people would want to steal your car’s license plates would be due to many reasons. To name a few:

-          The first and obvious reason would be to commit a crime with the victims’ number plates in plain sight. This would throw off the police and make their enquiries a little harder as the witnesses or the cameras that caught the numbers would have seen or shown a number that was stolen.

-          Some thieves steal license plates so that they can zoom around the cities recklessly and do whatever they want. The speed cameras that would capture them would show a car with the stolen plates and looked exactly like the original owner’s car. This is known as ‘car cloning’ and all bills that are incurred on the license plate (e.g. road tax) would be charged to the original owner.

Now, whatever the reason may be, you know you do not want to be caught in a nightmare situation like this. So, what are you expected to do before the theft happens to you?

There are theft resistant number plates on sale. You can have them installed and know that it will take a while longer to remove them thus discouraging any thief looking for a quick getaway. The negative aspect of these plates is that they can still be stolen (albeit after more than 3 minutes) and they cost you a lot more than the normal number plates.

As to what you can do after the theft has occurred is to report it immediately to the police who will record your number. Any expenses that are incurred on that license plate will not be your responsibility. Next, you can go and get yourself cheap replacement number plates and then have your car transferred to the new license number.

Number Plate Theft on the Increase

Friday, September 28th, 2012

One of the results of an increase in fuel prices worldwide is the rise in incidences of theft of petrol and diesel, and car number plate theft. Why are the two connected? Well, many petrol garages use number plate recognition technology to stop fuel theft, and if a thief has your number plate on his car then he is less likely to get caught. Of course, if someone steals your number plates then you could also find yourself in receipt of speeding or parking fines which could be a big hassle to sort out.

This isn’t a UK specific problem either. In one area of New South Wales, Australia, number plate thefts have risen by almost 15% over the past two years, according to the Herald Sun newspaper.

So what can you do to help prevent this happening to you?

Well apart from keeping your car in a secure area, which isn’t always possible, you can buy “anti theft” licence plate fixings. These are self tapping screws with a special security sleeve that spins round without unscrewing. They are almost impossible to remove without a special tool, and will certainly deter most thieves once they realise you have them. They can be purchased from many car part stores, including Halfords in the UK, and your local garage will be able to fit them for you for a small price.

To prevent the theft of fuel from your car, you can also purchase a locking fuel cap if you don’t already have one. These are easily available and fit around 90% of cars. A good alarm system is also advisable on your car, although check out the specifications as some alarms won’t be set off by someone removing your number plates.

If the worst does happen and your registration plate is stolen, then what should you do?

Well the first thing to do is inform the police and your insurance company as soon as possible. Then you need to look for a reliable company to provide replacements.

A stolen number plate is never a pleasant thing to have to deal with but if you take some of these precautions, and act quickly if it does happen to you, then you should minimise any problems you get resulting from the loss of your registration plate.

False Car Number Plates Used by Fuel Thief

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

Fuel cheat caught on CCTV, the police are asking for help hunting a man they believe is responsible for driving off from petrol stations in Telford with hundreds of pounds worth of fuel.

A CCTV image of the man filling up the silver colored Mazda RX-8 at the Asda petrol station in Donnington, Telford, Shropshire on September 23 has been released by police.

The West Mercian Police Force believe the same man has struck on at least four other occasions. Each time a silver Mazda RX-8 was used with different car number plates.

A West Mercia Police spokesman Chris Ammonds said: “At each theft – as with the Asda incident – it appears that the vehicle has been displaying false car number plates as the registration numbers have repeatedly come back to other vehicles that have had their number plates stolen.

The offences date back to August 13 last year, when a driver of a Mazda RX-8 fled a forecourt in Holyhead Road, Ketley, after filling up with £51.43 of fuel. The Shell garage in Stirchley was targeted in November, when a driver of the same sports car escaped with £30 of fuel.

As well as the Donnington incident, £58.14 of fuel was taken from a petrol station in Ketley on September 2 and £57.03 from the Stirchley site on September 16. Anyone with information should call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111. Most garages these day have number plate recognition cameras installed but these are rendered useless when the illegal replacement number plates are used that have no connection to the vehicle in which they are displayed.
