Regional Badges on Car Number Plates

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

It’s widely known that car number plates are wrapped up in  a whole lot of legislation regarding how they should be displayed. There are constraints
covering the font, colour, spacing size of characters and materials that car number plates can be made from. It is also illegal to have logo’s or emblems displayed on number plates.

It is permissible to have the European stars logo with the GB national identifier on number plates. This negates the need to have a GB sticker when traveling in the E.U. The logo needs to conform with EC Council Regulation 2411/98 which details the size and material for the logo. Some regional Flags are allowed by The Driver and vehicle Licensing Agency, DVLA.

The DVLA have allowed the use of Union Jack, Cross of St. George, Saltire and Welsh Dragon Flags in addition to the GB/Euro Flags. Any other flag, Emblem, Logo etc is not permissible for use on car number plates in the United Kingdom.
