The black number plates were first used to show a vehicles registration number in the early 1900's when registration numbers were started being issued. The classic number plates we see on vintage vehicles were originally issued by county councils. In those days the DVLA had not been created, today only companies registered with the DVLA can legally supply classic number plates, vintage number plates, black number plates, black and grey metal number plates or any type of number plates.
